About the Design

The Autistic Monologues was a devised piece that took its naming device and structure from The Vagina Monologues in order to discuss autistic joy and experiences, while featuring an autistic cast and crew. The set design itself was created because there is research that shows neurotypical neurons tend to create a web, while autistic neurons tend to “branch out”. Thus, the tree house was born and created as a playground for the actors. Part of the set includes one stuffed animal from each of the cast and crew, to uplift their love of their special interests. However, the design did not end there. It was important to include sensory friendly seating, so there were two seating sections: a “sensory seeking” section, which included silent stim toys attached to the chairs, and a “low sensory” section, which had couches, blankets, weighted stuffed animals, and the sound was quieter as well. This ensured everyone was able to participate however they chose.
