About the Design
Sophie McIntosh’s macbitches is a statement from trauma informed thespians to educational institutions, taking place in a Wisconsin apartment belonging to two seniors in a theatre BFA program, awaiting the results of the audition week. When a freshman is named for the role of Lady Macbeth, the seniors invite her over for drinks to introduce themselves.
For the set, it was important to not let the audience forget they are in a theatre, so the set became truncated, leaving the final wall detached from the proscenium, allowing for the more theatrical and emotional moments to linger outside the world of the apartment and in the theatre itself. The apartment was outfitted largely with students own decor to preserve the “college student” look.
